A client from up in Dothan, Alabama, recently brought his 2019 GMC Canyon to Precision Audio for a wheel and tires upgrade, along with a lift kit and step bar installation. The client wanted much taller tires on the truck to improve the vehicle’s look and offer more ground clearance. Part of making that happen required raising the suspension so the front tires wouldn’t rub. Of course, once up high, upgrading the GMC with step bars made getting in and out of the vehicle safer and easier.
GMC Canyon Wheel and Tire Upgrade
Working with one of our truck accessory experts, the client chose a set of 18-inch tall KMC XD811 Rockstar II wheels in a matte black finish. He decided on the Toyo Open Country R/T Rugged Terrain in a healthy 285/65-18 size for tires. We mounted the tires on the wheels using our Hunter touchless tire machine then balanced the assembly using our Road Force Balancer. This balancer can apply as much as 1,250 pounds against the tire to ensure that it’s seated perfectly on the wheel before measuring the assembly to calculate how to balancer it perfectly. We used Tire Pressure Monitoring Sensors on the new wheels to make sure that the truck’s computer could provide any pressure warnings.
Standing 32.8 inches tall, the truck needed a lift kit to provide adequate clearance. The client chose a 4-inch lift kit from Rough Country that includes new front and rear crossmembers, front and rear skid plates, new front suspension knuckles, differential drop brackets and rear spring spacer blocks. The kit also includes Rough Country’s Premium N3 front struts and rear shocks, along with all the hardware and brake line brackets we needed to execute the installation. It took most of a day to get the kit installed and torque all the fasteners to factory specification. This is a beautifully engineered kit that will maintain all the original driving characteristics of the vehicle.
Step Bars Add Convenience and Safety
The last step was to install a set of the N-FAB EpYx EXG15CC-TX drop-down step bars. These modern-looking bars add style to the vehicle while making it easier to get in and out. The steps bolt directly to the body of the truck, so they are stable and solid.
