A client from Port St. Joe recently dropped by Precision Audio to talk about upgrading his 2013 Ford F-150 stereo system. He planned to give the truck to his son and wanted it to have a great-sounding stereo system. We showed the client a Kenwood multimedia receiver with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The client liked the idea of his son being able to communicate without having to take his eyes off the road. After planning out a speaker and subwoofer upgrade, we scheduled an appointment to begin work.
Kenwood DDX9904S Multimedia Receiver
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto use the voice recognition technology built into iPhones and Android phones to allow the user to execute commands by speaking to the radio. Listening to incoming text messages, dictating responses and making phone calls are the most popular uses for these smartphone integration technologies. Of course, the user can choose music from the phone or access streaming services like Pandora and iHeartRadio just by asking. Navigation is provided via the phone, and destinations can be searched easily by just asking.
We added an SXV300V1 SiriusXM Tuner for genre-specific entertainment and sports all the time. A PAC Radio Pro interface connects the receiver to the truck wiring system and provides connectivity with the factory steering wheel audio controls.
Rockford Fosgate Speaker Upgrades
We installed a set of Rockford Power Series T1682 6×8-inch coaxial speakers in the front and back doors and powered them with a Kenwood KAC-M1804 amplifier. This amp will produce up to 45 watts per channel from its compact 5.5 x 3.675-inch chassis. The crossovers in the source unit were used to filter the bass from the door speakers to make the most of the amplifier’s power. We covered the inside door skins with a layer of MESA Mat sound deadening material to help keep noise out of the vehicle and improve the performance of the speakers.
To reinforce bass frequencies, we installed a pair of Rockford Punch-Series P3SD210 shallow-mount 10-inch subwoofers in an Atrend enclosure. The enclosure sits snugly under the rear bench seat of the truck so it doesn’t take up any valuable storage space. A Rockford P300x1 amp powers the subwoofers with up to 300 watts of power. We fed power to the amp with a MESA 8 AWG Power Kit.
Ford F-150 Stereo System Upgrade
With everything installed and the crossovers and amplifier sensitivity settings configured, it was time to turn this Ford F-150 stereo system back over to the client. He loved the way everything blended into the truck and was amazed at how much better it sounded.
