Precision Audio was recently contacted by this Camilla-based Silverado 2500HD owner for some assistance in upgrading the stereo system in the vehicle. The client wasn’t happy with the performance of the stereo and wanted something that would play louder and offer much better bass response. One of our Product Specialists inspected the vehicle, then worked with the client to audition upgrades that would deliver the performance he wanted.
JL Audio Steathbox Subwoofer Upgrade
The first order of business was to add a dedicated subwoofer to the sound system. The client wanted a solution that wouldn’t detract from the look of the vehicle, while still offering impressive bass response. After looking at the options, he chose a JL Audio Stealthbox for the Silverado. We installed the SB-GM-SLVCC3/10TW3/BK2 under the rear seat. This enclosure is home to a pair of 10TW3 10-inch subwoofers and includes a mounting location for the system amplifier in the middle of the enclosure.
Chevy Silverado Stereo System Amplifier
Next on the docket was to install a new amplifier to power the subwoofer enclosure and new speakers we’d be installing. The client chose a JL Audio XD1000/5v2 five-channel amp for the truck. This amplifier can provide up to 75 watts of power for each of the four interior speakers and an impressive 600 watts of power for the system subwoofer.
We used a PAC AmpPro4 AP4-GM61 and an APH-GM02 speaker wire harness. The AP4-GM61 interface extracts an audio signal from the factory radio and provides integrated volume control capabilities. The speaker wire harness allows us to feed the output of the new amplifier back into the factory wiring for a clean and tidy installation.
JL Audio Speaker Upgrade
The last step in upgrading the stereo system in this Chevy Silverado was to replace the speakers. The client chose a set of JL Audio C2-650X coaxial speakers for the front and rear doors. A set of Best Kits BKGMSB356 adapters allows the new round speakers to bolt into the oval speaker locations vacated by the factory equipment. We also applied several pieces of Hushmat damping material between the metal of the door skin and the speaker adapters to ensure there wouldn’t be any vibrations or rattles.
System Tuning and Delivery
With all the gear installed, our technicians finished the installation by setting the crossovers and sensitivity controls on the amp so it works seamlessly with the signal from the factory radio and the new speakers in the vehicle. The client was thrilled with the way the new stereo sounds and loved that it blended perfectly with the vehicle.
