A client from Camilla was at Precision Audio for window tint. While waiting, he asked about upgrading his 2017 Toyota Tundra stereo system. We gave him a demonstration of how a few simple upgrades would dramatically transform the performance of his sound system. He was thoroughly impressed and asked us to design an upgrade for his vehicle.
Step 1 – Add Bass
The first and most important upgrade to any factory-installed audio system is to upgrade the system with a subwoofer for better bass response. Even the most premium of factory sound systems lack the ability to produce significant bass. For this Toyota Tundra stereo upgrade, we ordered an Audio Enhancers TUNCM112 enclosure that is designed specifically for this vehicle. We installed a pair of Rockford Fosgate P3SD212 subwoofers in the enclosure and secured the system behind the rear seats of the truck against the back wall.
Step 2 – Add Power
The next step up upgrading a stock stereo system is to add more power. We suggested the Kenwood eXcelon X801-5 five-channel amplifier for this project. This compact amp will produce 300 watts from its subwoofer channels and 50 watts for the front and rear speakers. We used an AudioControl LC7i integration processor to extract a clean audio signal from the factory source unit.
Both the amplifier and the processor are mounted to the floor of the truck under the rear seat. We used M.E.S.A. power wire, speaker wire and interconnect cables to complete the installation.
Step 3 – Speaker Upgrades
With low-frequency audio performance handled by the subwoofer, the last step in upgrading any mobile sound system is to improve the speakers in the system. Upgraded speakers offer reduced distortion, increased power handling and can play louder than factory-installed speakers.
We installed a set of Rockford Fosgate T1650 Power Series coaxial speakers in the front doors of the Tundra. We used a set of BKTSB910 speaker adapters from Best Kits. The adapters allow the 6.5-inch speakers to fit into the oval factory speaker openings. We installed a set of T16 6-inch coaxial speakers in the rear doors.
Toyota Tundra Stereo Upgrade Project
After a good day of work, we had the stereo in the Tundra sounding amazing. The client was very impressed with the improved performance and pleased that none of the equipment was visible in the interior.
