A client from Bainbridge recently visited Precision Audio to inquire about upgrading his 2011 Chevrolet Camaro radio. The client wanted much better sound in his muscle car. After having a look at the vehicle and demonstrating a few upgrade options in our showroom, we put together a package that would give the client the performance he wanted.
Chevy Camaro Radio Upgrade
We started the project by completely removing the factory-installed Camaro radio and speakers. The client chose a Kenwood DDX395 multimedia source unit as a replacement for the factory radio. We used a PAC RPK5-GM4101 Radio Replacement kit to integrate the radio into the dash of the Camaro. This interface retains the factory steering wheel radio control functionality as well as OnStar features. The kit includes a new dash bezel that works with the original climate control system.
We mounted an Echomaster PCAM10L backup camera on the rear of the vehicle and tied it into the new source unit. The camera image displays automatically as soon as the transmission is put in reverse.
Camaro Speaker and Subwoofer Upgrade
With the radio in the dash, we turned to upgrade the speakers in the Camaro. The client chose Rockford Fosgate Power Series speakers for the system. We installed a set of T16 three-way speakers in the doors and matching T1693 speakers on the rear parcel shelf.
To give the system the impact and detail the client wanted, we added a single 12-inch Punch Series P3D412 subwoofer in an Atrend 12SQV vented enclosure.
Five-Channel Amplifier Solution
The client opted for a five-channel amplifier to keep the installation neat and tidy. We mounted a Rockford T1000X5ad amplifier in the vehicle and fed it with a MESA M2KIT4 4 AWG amp kit. This amp will produce up to 100 watts per channel for the front and rear speakers and an impressive 600 watts to the 12-inch subwoofer. The amp kit includes proper fusing to protect the amp and the vehicle in the event of an accident.
Camaro Sound System Upgrade Project
Once we finished the installation of the equipment, the last step was to configure the amp to work with the Kenwood radio. Our team set the crossovers and sensitivity controls on the amp to ensure the system sounds great at all volume levels.
The client returned to Precision Audio, anxious to hear his new sound system. He was immediately impressed with the improvement in detail and clarity of the system and blown away by the tight, controlled bass.
