A client from Attapulgus recently visited Precision Audio in Bainbridge to inquire about upgrading his 2007 Ram 1500 stereo system. He wanted Bluetooth, more audio source inputs, as well as better sound. After having a look at the vehicle and discussing how he uses it, we auditioned several source units, amplifiers, speakers and subwoofers in our showroom. We designed an upgrade solution that would meet his needs while staying within his budget.
Kenwood Radio Upgrade
We started the project by removing the factory radio and installing a Kenwood eXcelon KDC-X502 multimedia receiver in its place. A dash kit allows the new DIN radio to fit into the abnormal-sized opening left by the factory radio. We used an interface module to connect the stereo control buttons on the steering wheel to the new Kenwood receiver.
Rockford Fosgate Replacement Speakers
The next step in the project was to remove the front and rear door trim panels and extract the factory speakers. The client chose a set of Rockford Power-Series T1650 6.5-inch speakers in each of the four locations. The T1650 speakers are unique in that they are a component set, but have the tweeter mounted on a bridge in front of the woofer. This design ensures maximum space efficiency and great sound. We added a P1T-S 1-inch tweeter to the door panel. This gives the system more highs and allows it to keep up with the subwoofers we would be installing. The speakers are powered by a Kenwood eXcelon-Series X301-4 four-channel amp that produces 50 watts per channel.
Shallow-Mount Subwoofer System
To give the client the bass he wanted, we mounted a set of Rockford P3SD2-12 12-inch shallow-mount subwoofers in Bbox enclosures. The subs fit nicely against the back wall of the truck while allowing the rear seat to fold up. The subwoofers are powered by a Rockford P300X1 monoblock amplifier that produces 300 watts of power. The amplifiers are mounted on the floor of the truck between the subwoofer enclosures. We ran a 4-AWG power wire from the battery to back wall of the truck where it splits to each amp via a fused distribution block.
Ram 1500 Stereo System Upgrade
Once the new sound system was properly configured and tuned, it was time to return this Ram 1500 stereo upgrade project to the client. He was thrilled with the way the system sounded and was excited to have great music for his long drive between job sites.
