A client from Bainbridge recently stopped in at Precision in hopes of upgrading the system in his 1986 Chevy C10 truck. Once we had an idea of what he was looking for, we gave him a demonstration of different speakers and subwoofers so he could get a feel for how some simple upgrades would dramatically transform the performance of his sound system. He was thoroughly impressed and asked us to design an upgrade for his vehicle.
The first and most-important upgrade to any factory-installed audio system is to upgrade the system with a subwoofer for better bass response. Even the most-premium of factory sound systems lack the ability to produce significant bass. For this Chevy truck upgrade, we ordered an Atrend Dual 12″ woofer box that fits perfectly behind his bench seat. We installed a pair of Rockford Fosgate P3SD212 subwoofers in the enclosure and secured the system behind the bench seats of the truck, against the back wall.
With low-frequency audio performance handled by the subwoofer, the last step in upgrading any mobile sound system is to improve the speakers in the system. Upgraded speakers offer reduced distortion, increased power handling and can play louder than factory-installed speakers. We installed a set of Kenwood 6.5 coaxial speakers in the front doors of the Chevy. We then used a set of Kenwood 6×9 in Atrend 6×9 boxes and installed them behind the bench seat on the sides of the woofer box.
After a good day of work, we had the stereo in the Chevy sounding amazing. The client was very impressed with the improved performance and pleased that none of the equipment was visible in the interior.
